Are Employee Side Hustles Right Or Wrong? You Make The Call

Remote workers are increasingly using paid work hours to pursue side hustles, with one survey reporting that 51 percent of remote employees generate extra income and 58 percent have considered doing so. The report links this trend to the flexibility of remote work, economic pressure, and changing expectations about productivity and work-life balance.

The findings also point to a management challenge: employers worry that side jobs can reduce focus, weaken accountability, and make it harder to measure actual performance. At the same time, the report notes that many remote workers say they are more productive, sleep better, and value the flexibility enough to reject a full return to the office.

A related report found that about a third of remote workers were working two jobs, and that many concealed additional employment from their employers.

That broader trend suggests employers need clear policies on conflicts of interest, outside employment, timekeeping, and performance expectations, especially in remote settings where supervision is limited.

So, the question for our readers is: Are Employee Side Hustles Right Or Wrong?

Here is the opinion of one of the McCalmon editorial staff:

Jack McCalmon, Esq.

Having more than one job is not inherently wrong unless an employer's policy or other agreement prohibits it. What is wrong is being paid by one employer while working for another or performing self-employment work during scheduled work time for an employer that is paying for your full attention and effort.
